Future Leaders is a gap year programme in Hoedspruit, tucked at the foot of the Klein Drakensberg in the heart of South Africa’s safari country. It’s a place where young people can slow down, step into real adventure and work out who they are and where they’re heading.
“Hoedspruit” is Afrikaans for “hat creek”, a nod to the area’s rich history. It’s a small village, but it has everything you need. There are big grocery stores, fuel stations, cosy restaurants and a lively social scene. Hoedspruit even has its own airport, so getting here is easy.
Most importantly, this place reflects what we care about. That’s because environmental and social responsibility sit at the heart of our mission to grow conscious, responsible future leaders.
Hoedspruit is known as the Safari Capital of South Africa, and for good reason. The famous Kruger National Park is just a short drive away. The Panorama Route and the breathtaking Blyde River Canyon are only 30 minutes from the village. On top of that, the area is surrounded by private game reserves.
So whether you’re after a thrilling safari or a quiet nature walk, the wild is right on your doorstep.
The weather here is glorious for most of the year. Days are usually sunny, with average temperatures of around 25°C.
Summers can reach 40°C, which is perfect for the pool. In winter, July days still hover around 24°C, with cooler, refreshing evenings.
In short, Hoedspruit is a place where every day brings something new.

Natalee’s background is in psychology, education and leadership development, and she has a real passion for helping young people make the leap from school into adult life.
It all started in 2019, after her eldest son finished school. Like so many school leavers, he felt a bit lost. There were so many options, yet nothing gave him the direction he was looking for. That’s when the idea took shape: a gap year programme that’s exciting, but also genuinely life-changing.
Natalee couldn’t find anything like it, so she built it herself. She drew on years of counselling, coaching and leadership work to create the Future Leaders Gap Year Programme. It’s about far more than fun. It gives young adults the experiences and skills they need to grow up well.
Her hope is simple. She wants every young person to discover their strengths, their passions and their “superpower”, and then use them to make a real difference. Her vision is a generation of conscious, self-aware, socially responsible and capable adults.
